The Clearing

It's hard to name a photo.

This shot was taken on the same day as Old Faithful/Golden Pine. The location is a hidden clearing in the forest. I'm not going to say any more about it than that because I really don't want anyone else to know about it. If you can work it out from the image then good for you - you deserve it.

This clearing is a very special place to me. It's where I go when I need to feel in touch with nature, and want to guarantee I can do so in absolute solitude. So this image means quite a lot to me.

This day was one of the most beautiful I've ever spent there. The air was filled with swirling droplets of mist that sparkled golden in the low winter sun. The mist was thick enough that every projecting branch of every tree cast a shadow through the air. Like most photographers I can't get enough of such conditions.

This shot came about as a happy compromise. I had intended to shoot a fairly typical image with the rays radiating out from the centre of the shot, i.e into the sun. But I couldn't get a grip on the lens flare, try as I might. So I moved to the side and found a new composition that I think ended up being much better than the shot I planned.
