Elia Locardi's Favorite Cameras for Landscape Photography

Fuji Film X-t1 for landscape photography

Fuji Film X-T1 Mirrorless Camera The Fujifilm X-T1 is one of my all time favorite cameras.  Lately I have found myself using this camera more and more because it is simply fun to shoot with.  It has an ample 16mp sensor that does well in low light and is great when you cannot afford to carry any extra weight.  I have found the articulating screen and focus peaking to be a great advantage in the field, and the weather sealing makes it perfect for wet locations like Iceland.

Fuji Film X-t10 for landscape photography

Fuji Film X-T10 Mirrorless Camera The Fujifilm X-T10 is a brand new camera that I just added to my camera bag (it replaced the X-M1 shown in the tutorial).  I use this camera both as a backup to my X-T1 and for my behind the scenes "Moments in Time" photos.  If you are looking at adding your first mirrorless camera to your bag, the X-T10 is great because it has the same sensor as the X-T1, it uses the same lens mount, and has an even smaller body for more weight saving.  The new hybrid AF feature also makes it one of the best autofocusing cameras in the Fujifilm line.

Nikon D810 for landscape photography
Nikon D810 DSLR Camera As seen in the tutorial, I use the Nikon D810 heavily in my work.  The massive 36 megapixel sensor, the insanely clean high ISO settings, and the massive number of lenses available for this camera make it one of the most powerful camera bodies currently on the market.  This camera rates about as high as you can get for image quality, but it does lose some points for being both heavy and taking up a lot of room in my bag.  If you need to shoot at ISO 3200 or higher, and you need the highest resolution images for potential clients then this is definitely the way to go.

Nikon D750 for landscape photography

Nikon D750 DSLR Camera I personally do not own a D750 (yet), but since most of the tutorial was filmed on D750s (Fstoppers brought 3), I feel like it is a very powerful camera for a fraction of the price of the D810.  Like my Fujifilm cameras, the D750 has an articulating screen which is very useful for low angles and from the comparisons I've done on the road, the high ISO performance might be slightly better than the D810.  At 24mp, this camera is also very good at resolving high amounts of detail.  If I was on a budget and had to travel with just one DSLR camera, I think this might be the camera I would pack in my bag.  Oh, and as you can see in the tutorial, this camera has some of the best video quality of any DSLR if you like taking video clips during your travel.

DJI Phantom 3

DJI Phantom 3 Quadcopter I have to give Lee credit for causing me to break down and buy a drone.  All of the aerial footage in the Landscape tutorial was shot on the DJI Phantom 2 with a GoPro Black Silver Edition, but I went ahead and picked up the new Phantom 3 for my own personal use.  I love the quality of the 4k camera and the new monitoring features through their mobile app makes it very easy to frame up the perfect video or still shot.  This relatively inexpensive aerial camera has opened up new doors for creativity and has allowed me to capture compositions not yet previously possible without renting an actual helicopter.
