For reader reference: I picked up a camera in March 2020 to document the pandemic and have continued to practice weekly. I've learned my niche is Street Photography/Documentary Photography. This is the last photograph I've taken. Location: NYC - Brooklyn; Date: September 2020. Camera: RICOH GRiii - monochrome.
Open to any and all critiques, but am specifically looking for lighting advice. I tend to shoot in natural light, BnW, and have had a tricky time getting a good balance of depth without washing out the RAW image. What are your approaches/go-to settings to shooting in urban natural light?
for this photo I would use a neutral density filter even though there appears to be little contrast. A little more exposure to get more detail in the shadows, Hope that helps.
So given that I live in a town of 7k people and the nearest "city" is over 5 hours away, I can't give much advice in terms of urban shooting! However, I'd say that my eye in this picture is drawn into the really light area of the sky. I keep dropping down to look at the interesting subjects, but the sky is SO "constrasty" it keeps stealing my attention. You might be able to address that somewhat in post; increase your shadows a little to give more foreground detail; even use a fill flash to give yourself more detail up front.
