This is a masterful image Chris. It is so simple but I think the composition is spot on.
I think the strength of the image lies in the balance - the large fluffy cloud plays off the smaller dark (visually heavy) mass of the headland, both anchored by the dark sea.

I suspect you played around with the amount of headland (correct?) and cropped to your taste. For me if the headland was much larger/smaller the image would not have the same impact.

Other than that I have to say I love the toning (hey, aren't you the guy that love popping colors?). Again this would not work for me if the sky were a vibrant blue.

Great job, a winner for me!

Thanks very much, Alan! I particularly respect your opinion. No, it's uncropped. I really enjoy carefully framing up, if I see something worth showing others.

I did desaturate the colour in comparison with how it looked at the scene, and in the ex-camera files. This seemed to suit the overall simplicity of the concept - trying to distil an essence, or something of the kind, at the back of my mind at the scene.

Thanks Chris, and I yours.I think it's wonderful how you have created this as a vision and I think your explaining this will help others.

It's a brave man that frames the final mage in the viewfinder. I have been bitten too many times after losing a composition - I now take the image I want, and also a wider one to give room in case a crop is needed.( straightening horizon, improved balance etc).
I have to repeat that you did a great framing this one,

Thanks, Alan. This was taken with my old MF 28mm. I did "zoom" out with my 20 soon after, but no go - just checked the also-rans. I had a feeling there was a keeper amongst several images similar to this.

I think this was handheld, as the cloud was moving in an unpromising direction; soon the shot was "gone".

I always try to level the camera, using its artificial horizon (often very inaccurate) or the sea horizon against frame edge as here, or against viewfinder grid. Invariably I make minor adjustments in post.

Alan's post is spot on so I'll just say Ditto. LOVE it!

Thanks very much, Ruth! You can be my friend. I can cope with such critique. :-)

You have posted a lot of great photos in this group.
This is in my opinion stands out as the best.
Fantastic image Chris!

Thanks for your kind words, Radisa! Your opinion is highly valued. Thought they would be too subdued for your tastes.
