Welcome to the group Reed! I love that your stuff is really different from the things we've seen so far. For now, let me say that the second picture here is really nicely done! I have to think about the first one some more and I need to go to work. I'll be back! :)
Hi Reed! I echo Ruth's comments, but in reverse! Prefer the first one.
Composition doesn't quite sit right for me in the second, although there's a promising (and simple) concept there. Maybe I'd be tempted to get closer still, and lower, to reduce the amount of sand at bottom, and increase the bokeh effect, or get back further, and reduce the log to a small but obvious accent, using a small aperture. Keep posting!
Thanks Ruth and Chris for the comments. The whole point of the first one was to be a true minimalist shot only giving enough information to convey the 'story'. Whether or not it succeeded, well that is a different thing entirely.
Chris, I agree with you 100% about the second one, I take a lot of 'lying on the beach shots' and looking at it now realize I did not get low enough on it and the DOF on the sand is not quite right. Next time I'm at the beach I will also try a way back shot if I can find the right subject.
Just a fun shot below. With a thinner dof and lower angle, but not the greatest composition.
