I was surprised that my photo got the attention of Ruth, thanks :) So I decided to share my photo here.
I am fairly new to Photography, so I am aiming to improve my skills as much as I can, and I am very much welcome to your critiques.
I saw a random wall while walking home, and as I noticed that the blocks used were not uniform (which felt really abstractly to me), it was my "Decisive Moment" and I took a shot of it. Felt that it was boring when the photo is colored, so I decided to go B&W on this one, as it really shows the texture and uneven details more.
Thanks in advance you guys :)
Hey there Andres, welcome.
This is a good start.
You have good texture detail throughout, and you did a great job with how the stones at the borders of this image are cleanly cropped, except for the two small stones at the left side which really aren't any issue you don't have any seams oddly meeting the edge of the image, that's good. Many new photographers may not pay attention to that detail.
Keep shooting, I look forward to see what else you find.
Thanks for that feedback Joe :) I am guilty of not recomposing my shots for better framing. I should have taken more time, since they are rocks and are not going anywhere anyway. I should also review my photos multiple times, so as to not miss good cropping opportunities at post.
No guilt necessary. For this photo I said you did a good job of composing this image, better than many new to photography.
I like it. I'm guilty of also shooting an occasional brick wall just because I like the textures. My only quibble here would be the overall brightness of the stones. I think a slight Levels adjustment could bring out the less obvious textures of the surfaces.
Suggestion:
Ooohh, that's a good re-process of my photo. Thanks for that Phillip :)
Hey Andres - Welcome!
I love walls. Seriously, they are so photogenic! You did really well here. Joe is right about your crop - it is perfect. And, what makes me happy is that, when there are horizontal lines to this degree, they need to be straight and they are! Yea!
I also like Phillip's exposure tweak. Just in case other groups you are in don't do this, we will often take a screen capture and play with them for suggestions. No offense! In fact - it is a good sign that the person liked it enough to want to contribute feedback at that level!
Well done all around Andres! Looking forward to more from you!
Thank you for introducing me here Ruth.
What Ruth said is true; I usually won’t waste my time making a comment or suggest an edit if I don’t think the image is good enough to attempt a beneficial tweak. Some photos are just beyond repair, but if there is a way to impart some helpful advice for a different angle or time of day suggestion, then I may do that instead of sharing what I think could help an existing image. It’s all done with the best intentions.
Some people seem to HATE it, though, so don’t hesitate to tell us if you’d rather we don’t screw around with your work.
No worries, I loved your re-edit of my photo :)
Yeah, there are people who get offended when their photos are re-edited, even for constructive criticism. I don't mind that, I love getting a different perspective with my shots.
I can see if someone changes my finished work and then posts it on social media without telling anyone that they changed my photo. Then people will see the changed image and erroneously think that is my work. I specifically ask models and other people with whom I've worked to not make any changes to the finished images I give them, and that if they DO make any changes, that they state as such when they share the image. People are going to do what they want, though.
Here, on the other hand, I don't mind someone editing one of my photos as a means of showing me specifically what they are suggesting.
