Ruth Carll's picture

Sage in Bud

I took these yesterday and wound up with 3 that I liked. I'd love feedback as well as a pick of one to upload to my profile. Thanks All!

I like them. I think maybe the 1st one needs more DOF.
The second one is my favourite.
Nice shots Ruth.

thanks Jeremy!

I like the composition and cold feeling on first one Ruth.

I agree with Jeremy, Ruth. Definitely the second; in the others the shallow DOF leads to some visual confusion, at least in my little brain! In the second, the sharp areas are more quickly "read" as being closest to this viewer. If anything, I wonder if LESS DOF might make them more quickly intelligible. The composition in the first is strongest for me, as for Alex. To be honest, I don't think they're quite of the calibre as your existing portfolio florals. I'd work the location some more if it's still possible.

Your blacks have blocked up again, Ruth.

Awesome! This is two steps off the porch so easily revisited. I wonder whats up with the blocking? I can't see it on my screen. How frustrating is that ?! I will look at it at work and see if i can figure that out. Thanks for letting me know Chris!!

Here's an edit with exposure maxed out and shadows raised to maximum level as well, to make it clearer where those areas are, Ruth. The jet black hasn't budged. I've followed with a histogram of your original.

Watching for things piling up on the left edge of the histogram as you process monitors this. My software tells me your image as posted is 35% maximum black. At most, 10% in a "busy" image with lots of little shadows is about the limit before it starts to be a visual problem, in my experience. Theoretically, you ought to be able to fade imperceptibly into max black, but it's hard to achieve.

Maybe if you tweak your monitor's brightness or contrast you might see it more easily too, Ruth.

Thanks Chris! I just got to work and I totally see it here. Your example really helps too.

That virtually confirms that a monitor issue is the reason for your not seeing it more easily, Ruth.

The last one for me Ruth. The Sage has a life of its own. It's like a dancer. Beautiful work !

Thank you Sandra!
