Gion-Andri Derungs's picture

Desire

I messed up an macro shot. I judged the dof wrong on the camera display and when I saw it on the big screen... But because it's the only shot I have from it and I really like how the beetle is looking into the void, I decided to take a more creative approach to it. So I tried to create a moody, dreamy B&W picture out of it.

Please let me know, what do you think of it.

Edit: Ian Luyten reminded me, in another topic, to my relationship to music. If I had to add a track to this picture, it would be Marooned from Pink Floyd (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7YMI39sObY). I think Marooned wold be a nice title for that picture as well!. ;)

I am too stupid to know or care what SHOULD be done so I do rather like the focus easing off across the antennae towards the void.

ps, I learned about 50 years ago that a true Photographer never messes up a shot. He just has to find a good reason why it does not obey the arbitrary rules of society.

I like that!

Me too

I like it a lot!

Here is my take on the rules: We should know AND undetstand them becuase they are the foundation. This is particularly important for new people. Then, as you grow in experience, understanding the rules ensures that you also know how/when to break them! I think (and dont yell at me this is my opinion) that most people - new and experienced - 'know' the rules but dont 'understand' them and this is why they don't like them.

This image has story and drama. There is depth, good composition and all around great mood. Is the beetle in focus? Partly. Is the eye in focus? No. Does that hurt the image? Not at all for me!

Thank you Ruth. Your conclusion is in fact the same as I thinking.

I don't yell at you, that's for sure. First, everybody can have it's opinion. Second, I see it the same way. The rules are good to know, but break them if you need it. Why? At the end it should be the result that counts.

I would explain it like this:

"The beetle is leaning into the void to get a better look and the depth of field exemplifies its yearning to know the present, the past, and the future."

I imagine that's what a self-important art critic might say if he saw this in a gallery. LOL

But I do really like it and I think the missed focus is serendipitous.

Thank you very much. It's very interesting what's coming back, if you ask people about their opinion. I'm always curious. That's the reason why I'm asking. ;)

I really like the picture because it has a lot of mood in it. What you cannot know, the beetle is looking at the scenery below. So maybe he's simply enjoying it?! ;)

PS: The scenery below is called Ruinaulta (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruinaulta). I'm living behind the ridge on the left side. It's part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

you have a way with words Philip!

"Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like am artist"
Pablo Picasso

Great quote. Never heard it before.

The music beautifully complements the picture. I love the combo.

Edit: I know a fair share of Pink Floyd, but I must shamefully admit that I didn't know this one. It may be that I mostly know the albums and less the tracks...
