I am trying out some white ink. It is harder than expected! It has zinc in it (think sunscreen) and it turns out that it is heavy.
It sinks really fast and often in a ball.
This first one spread out a little but was moving fast as it is a little soft focus.
The second is from my profile. It is heavy cream and acted differently. Just for comparison.
Well we'll see how this goes!
Very interesting and beautiful.
Reminded me of a video I had to re-watch just now; Super Glue mixed into a glass jar of Baking Soda saturated Water. The glue instantly turns into a 'plastic' and becomes solid making similar patterns; easily also mixed with dyes.
Wonderful fluidic abstracts.
Thanks Joe!!
Somehow I missed the B&W image on first viewing of this post.
These are very cool, but the B&W seems a little soft. Like the focus is in front of or behind the main blob. Are you setting focus before the exposure or attempting to hit the ink with autofocus when you make the photo?
I still want to try this myself. I have an idea that I think you haven't shared yet and you might like it. (No, I'm not telling you. LOL)
You're funny. Keep your secrets then! The focus on these is tricky. If the focal plane is too wide, you catch the glass front or back. Too narrow and you can miss the ink. So a have rigged a thing that I put in the water off to the side that I focus on. (I'm going to give away a technique here) I have a layer of oil floating on the surface because the ink will sit on it until I'm ready. It gives me a little time between dropping the ink and needing to start the shutter release reps. Trouble is, the ink will drift a little and then I can have focus issues. I guess if this was easy it wouldn't be as rewarding when it works!
And rewarding it is! I always enjoy seeing these - have you considered producing a series using similar colors? I bet they'd look stunning on a wall.
Can't wait for your YouTube video describing your technique (hint hint.....).
BTW - I agree with Phillip on the monochrome version, and can appreciate how hard this must be,
Also can't wait to hear Phillip's secret.......
Thanks Alan! and me too!
Really nice Ruth. I love the second one. It reminds me to take some time to experiment for myself again... ;)
