Banner Challenge - Ian Luyten

NICE WORK IAN!!!!! A WEEL DESERVED NEW BANNER FOR THE GROUP!

Hi All, for our next banner challenge, show us an example of you trying something totally outside of your wheelhouse. This should epitomize the 'Experimental ' aspect of our group. Share a little about what you were going for in the comment. Any subject/technique welcome.

To start us off with something strange.... Here is an ICM shot of a trail that didn't work out quite as I'd hoped. I overworked it trying to save it and then, i inverted it and kind of liked the blue and white abstract nature of it.

So, this is totally out there for me. I'm completely open to feedbck about what works and what doesn't.

Ooh, I like this, Ruth! Reminds me of Gerhard Richter's paintings. No, really... ;-)

I think a slice of it a bit like this would be a PERFECT banner for this Group.

You know I NEVER leave my comfort zone. Let alone visit the land of ICM.

thanks for the thumbs up. I have been waiting since I posted it hear your "not you too going to ICM!" comment! tee hee

Please forgive my ignorance, but what is ICM? Can I do it too?

ICM is (In Camera Movement). Set your exposure for a slow shutter setting, (example between 1/20th thru 1 full second) and while the picture/shutter is going on, move the camera. This causes the exposure to "smear" in the direction of movement.

This morning was my first attempt. I found it easier if I tightened up my aperture to f22~f38 (the 18 to 55mm kit lens), and set my shutter to 1s. Check out my thread in this discussion group to see my first attempts.

I've done that using a fill flash and get strange results.

Looks great Ruth, very creative.

My first wildlife photos. Not great. But not horrid either, I hope.

Not bad Michael! The first one, in particular, is great. The composition is spot on.

So, these are a great example of my wierd philosophy bit in your manhole post about people's reactions to my own work.

When i look at these, for 2, 3 and 4, i thought "Squirrels are a good subject for someone new to photographing nature - you can hang out on your front step and shoot and learn all day." rather than just enjoying the view. When i saw number 1, i just thought "Beautiful! Look how cute he is!" That's what i meant about knowing when an image works. When the viewer dosen't question the subject, its probably a good sign that the image is working (in general) i don't know if this makes sense for others but it works for me when listening to people's reactions to my stuff. ;)

I think I get what you mean. And thanks again for the ego booster. I am a very impatient man, which is my excuse for not adjusting the exposure on the image of the peeking rascal. I like my shoots slow, but grow impatient to reveal them prematurely. I gotta work on that.

Your shots of squirrels are better then any I have managed to capture! I have about eight that visit daily for breakfast (we feed them peanuts). I almost got an amazing shot but my lens back focused on me.. dang it! A squirrel was running on the ground, and 3/4ths towards me, and the shot had all four legs off the ground.. nope, blurry! ug.. I went back to the butterflies at the flowers.. haha.

I derailed a little, but good shots, with the first one being the gem of the set.

Hello Michael, the first one like Ruth mentioned is the one that works for me. Maybe more sharpness.

Really love the blues and whites and tones of your ICM Ruth, very painterly! :)

Hey Ruth and all other members. So this is going to be bigger as CtC.... So my pictures are mostly very full of stories and detail, but I did something I normally would not shoot. Normally I think it's a boring picture but I more and more liked it. So this is it.Hope you like it. Feedback is welcome.

Ah.... but Paul, sometimes less is more and the simplest of stories the most impactful.

I really like this shot - it is bold, colorful and draws the viewer in to investigate further.

Love it. That soft swoopy cloud and hard plane trails create an appealing contrast.

This is really outside my wheelhouse. So minimal turns abstract; b/w, and , 270mm Macro shot at roughly 20ft away.

So experimentation from my normal style is: Macro-abstract, b/w, Orton effect and a vertical 9:16 crop.

Um Joe... you need to move...into this wheelhouse that is. This is excellent! Super well done! You have a great eye. More please!

Thank you for the kind words Ruth!

I have a few more shots from this set, I can't wait to tinker with them later today.

Hey Joe.I like this picture.thinks it's a ice cube, and I would like this cube in a smaller version (landscape). More black and just that cube. Not centered and only backlit. But I like the simplicity.

Thanks Paul.

When you mean smaller do you mean zoomed in (smaller inward) or smaller meaning zoomed out (entire cube)? Sadly I'm at the limits of the image and can't zoom in any further (without the image breaking down); but I can try a new closer shot using my big lens the next walk in that area.

Hello Joe. I ment zoom out. Sorry for the
confusion .

That I can try. :)

Something along these lines?

Yes exactly. Now the subject is isolated by all the negative black space. For me this work's much better. Tnx for the effort Joe.

Thank you for nudging me in this direction. I see what you mean, with the blacks crushed the subject truly pops. I also prefer this version more then my original.

I Really like the bold contrast in this one !

this is my attempt of capturing/catching/trapping light inside a beer-bottle.
I did it by mounting my 50mm backwards, pointing it straight down into the beer-bottle which I lit from the side with a LED -desk light from IKEA ...

I really like it; love the gradations of the color, lights and darks.

Thanks !
The effect was better than what I hoped for.

It shows that with almost no cost you can create a image that inspire people. Maybe the top corners darker, maybe not.

Thanks !
Not too sure about the top corners either, but I figured, for a banner, you wouldn't need those top corners anyway ...
(possible crop included)

And finally your picture Ruth. I had to take several times for this one. That's why I didn't comment. ICM is not accepted by my brains for some reason like Chris. It feels unnatural for me personally. And I agree here with Chris with a slice of it. Hope you don't kick me out...... ;>)

Hey group. Wish you all the best. Many trolls keep rating my portfolio with 1 stars so I decided to leave Fstoppers. Even admins don't respond. Heading off to 500px if you need me.

Sorry to hear that Paul, the frustration is real, ug... I know your gone already but just incase you do read this.. be well and stay inspired!
