Sastrugi Series

Hiked to Dream Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park to catch sunrise and get images of methane bubbles in the ice. These wind-scoured snow drifts turned-out to be the highlight of the trip. Overcast, soft light. Processing was minimal: desaturated, then tweaked the tone curve to bring out textures.

I really like these. Very clean and sharp with nice control in the B&W conversion. Good job!

Thanks Deleted User. I was amazed at how sharp some of the edges of the snow were. Almost knife thin in places. These were shot on a tripod, so that definitely helped to maintain the sharpness.

Hi Folks. the set of images are very much impressive.
Posting 2 queries here. (1) Image 1: is there a little bit of noise? or I am mistaking that. (2) could all 3 images a bit more sharper at edges where good contrast is available? like clarity offered by LR/ACR?
thanks.

Hi Vijay Mewada, thanks for the feedback! All images were shot at ISO 200. Light was soft, but still very directional, so I think you are seeing the grain in the snow? On the edges, likely down-sampling. I didn't re-sharpen after scaling to this size.

thanks

Hi Chad. I really like the texture and soft tones in these. They may be an accurate representation of what you witnessed but I'm wondering due to their abstract nature whether you would gain anything from increasing texture/clarity/sharpness to help promote the textural qualities.

Just a thought - they are wonderful as they are but for my own taste I think they may benefit from tweaking.

I hope you are able to comment on other discussions. As a community driven by the input of others I think we should all feel comfortable contributing our own viewpoints.

Thanks Alan, I'll keep tweaking. Definitely still getting comfortable providing feedback here, not confident that it counts for much. But thank you for the encouragement!

Hey Chad - know that every opinion is important and respected, so please don't hold back.
My feeling is that "anyone with a set of eyes is qualified to express an opinion".

I think it also important to evaluate (and hopefully provide feedback) so you can discover what works in photos for your own personal taste.

Those images are great. I don't have the vocabulary to tell you why I think so. Sorry
