Chloe Kramer's picture

Sky Experiment

I do not know what category this would fall into, so if it’s not this one just let me know and I will try other.

I have recentlyBeen experimenting with the different things that my camera can do. I took this one evening about an hour and a half before sunset. It has went through substantial post processing. The first is the original, and the second is the post processed version.

I am looking for any CC

This definitely belongs here, Chloe, although our Dear Leader Ruth is the arbiter. I like the moody, stormy effect. I prefer the unedited image in this respect though, as the second looks like a comp, which don't do it for me. However the recomposing and what you've done to the clouds gives the image more form. That stark disc of the sun is what doesn't quite gel for me. Keep at it though as these images have promise

I've done many similar ones with long lenses, and there can be amazing colours - bronzes and greens - in the clouds, while a just-rising or setting sun can have wonderful atmospheric shimmering effects. Contrast is a bit less of a problem when the sun is very close to the horizon, but you have to be ready and work quickly before it becomes a stark disc or disappears. And you have to be careful as you can damage your eyes. I put a ND gel in one eyepiece for the purpose.

Thank you Chris! I am not completely sure what you mean by stark disc for the sun. I had originally edited in a selective edit to drop the exposure on part of the sun, hoping to change it to a moon looking shot, but here is the edit without that disk.

What I mean, Chloe, is that the razor-sharp outline of the sun's disc looks at odds to me with the remainder of the image, and the original, which has a softer, billowing, boiling, fluid look. The sun looks as if it's come from another image altogether, or is even a simple geometric form added to the original. The net effect for me is that it doesn't quite look as if it belongs there.

However, you may want that effect. People combine images for just such effects, including fantasy images. These don't appeal to me, but that's very personal. You're a creative soul, so don't let me put you off if that's the effect you seek. No two people's tastes align perfectly, so do your own thang!
