Any advice on how I might be able to draw the eye through the two big "trees" in this picture? I want it to look like a dark path into a mysterious forest.

This image has a fantasyesque feel to it and yet remains firmly rooted (sorry) in reality.
On your page I did not see a tilt-shift lens in your kit list. If you have never played with one you really might enjoy the cool effects you can create with one. Specifically shifting the POF (Plane Of Focus) from the perpendicular, a phenomena called the Scheimpflug principle.
If you want to experiment with one before you lay out the cash, you may want to rent one and see what you think of it. In most cases most camera stores will apply the rental fee to the purchase price so either way you win.

I really want to try a tilt shift and I’ve thought about renting. That would be perfect for what I’m trying to do! I’ll have to try and put some money away for it, but that will be coming up!
Great idea, Dylan! I've never tried what you're doing, but I love seeing your efforts with this concept.
Is this in any way heading in the direction you're thinking of? It's a bit of a radical departure, I know. My overall impression is that, despite the selective focus, the "forest" is a bit too easy to discern in your original given your intent, so my thinking is to make the nearest part of the path easier to see than the rest, which is more implied.
Yes, that’s one way I thought to do it, I had applied some vignette before. I might add a bit more and maybe lighten the path that goes into the trees a bit
Hi Dylan, I really don't have much more to add over what Julian & Chris have offered. I love the way you challenge yourself to create something different - keep pushing yourself.
The one thing I could add is that you seem to be looking at the 'trees' from a level equal to the top or above. If wishing to replicate a path through a forest I think it might help if you could get to a lower level (ie the level you would shoot if on an actual path).
I am not sure how practical that is, but think the lower perspective may help convey your story.
My other suggestion might have been to crop in from the left (as the 'trees' on the left seem to turn more into shrubs') but I think Chris has trumped that idea with his suggestion of a heavy vignette.
Keep on brining your creativity to the table, I'm sure you are providing food for thought for so many others.
