Dean Wilson's picture

Submit and Engage. Resistance is Futile.

Are you aware the added benefit (?) of using a pinhole body cap is the ability to judge if it is time to clean your sensor?

It is not always apparent, without viewing at 100% all the sensor spots.

For this experiment I photographed the grey sky (typical for Oregon) and for the first image I used a RF 15-35mm because it was handy and the second I used my pinhole cap.

Next was to open each in Camera Raw then select Heal and Visualize Spots.

Here is a screenshot of each....notice any difference?

Time to clean sensor...ya think!

That's a darn good point Dean. I try to stay away from f16 and above as dust spots become WAY more evident at smaller apertures.

Times I have been lazy and used f22 or beyond to get longer exposure times (too lazy to grab an ND filter) I have paid the price when processing.

Obviously dust spots are still there at wider apertures, but they are just not as noticeable.

Just as an FYI - I always think twice about changing lenses and am very careful to limit the time the sensor is exposed because of this very reason.

How do others deal with dust spots, and do others clean their sensor regularly (and how....)?

I have not cleaned mine. sort of scared to. Lol! Had this video on my watch later list forever - https://youtu.be/-l4YH_I7M1A

I don't trust myself....I'd hate to scratch my sensor out of an "oops" moment.

Locally, I can get the sensor cleaned for $80 with same day turn around.

Jennifer have you looked into Perfect Image at 1953 Fruitville Pike, they advertise $64.99 to clean your sensor.

Exactly on the possibility of an "oops" mistake doing it myself. As for Perfect Image, It's close enough that I walked there in the past for a lens repair. Ive been ignoring sensor cleaning; but after your post here, I'm thinking maybe I'll take it over there. The price isn't bad compared to other locations. Thanks Dean!

Glad to assist.

Perfect Image is just over 2800 miles away, so for me, I think I will try someplace closer.

Lol! I'll keep you posted!
