Julian Ray's picture

Playing with this month's theme of "contrasting light and shade"

It is not often that a client will let me play.... really play with the subject.

In the case of this image I was on an architectural assignment and had some time between setups to just follow my eye.

Once I got back to my studio and loaded up all the day's images for the client to review they saw this and liked it so much that they commissioned me to craft a whole series of images in this feel for them.

So once again proof positive that playing is good for you!

Thanks Alan for another great topic to explore. 🙏

That would be an awesome situation in which to find myself. This is an excellent image in all ways, Julian. Just out of curiosity ... what is it and where?

Thank you Jennifer.
To my way of thinking an image works best where there is room in the image for the viewer to bring their own story into the image, in effect to collaborate with the photographer and subject.
I try (not always successfully) in most my work to create a story in such a way that is less explicit, as that tends to exclude participation from the viewer, and more open for involvement from the audience.
So... What do you think it is and were is it?

There's no doubt of a dystopian-world feel here. Maybe the exterior of Winston's records department offices in the Ministry of Truth with the memory hole chute coming out the side of the building? Hopefully that's not the case. Lol! I have no idea for real though - parking garage? a bridge?

This place is what you think it is. That is the beauty of collaboration.

Perfect!

Hey Julian, it's great to see you back posting.

This is an intriguing image, I love the interplay between the diagonals and the frame formed by the structure on the right.

Glad to see you out 'playing' again, hopefully you are still finding lots of opportunities over there in your neck of the woods.

Thank you Alan, am always playing, following my eye, just been a lot of work and not a lot of time to do so.
Sorry I've not been carrying my weight around here recently.
Fun theme for this month and lots of great ideas being shared with us.

Fantastic image Julian. NEVER stop PLAYING!!!!!

tHanks!
You are a prime example of someone who creates best when you are playing, an inspiration to be sure.

Getting paid to have fun is the best job available. I love the composition of lines, shapes, texture, contrast...

Very good job indeed.
