Dean Wilson's picture

ME-ICM

I had to try it again.

There were two take-aways from today's attempt. 1) It is difficult to line up a single point especially when the tripod is in the grass and on a slope. 2) This was my first attempt...all the rest went downhill from there.

EOS R5 w/24-70mm f/2.8 L
f/8 ~ 0.8 sec. ~ ISO 100 ~ 31mm
Nine exposures

While I was walking around looking for another shot, I found a great composition. There was a mural on a building that was being remodeled and a chain linked fence to keep the riff-raff out.

I composed the shot and focused on the fence. I like how the one flower appears to be the little girls hand holding the fence.

NOTE: There is about 15 feet between the fence and the mural.

Actually, both flowers on either side look like she's holding the fence with both hands. That's a really neat photo. I didn't realize the fence was separate. I liked your composition idea!

I just used Google Earth measuring tool and the separation is actually 25 feet.

Hi Dean - I really like the 2nd shot as it tells such a powerful story.

I love it the way it is, but would be interested to see the same with a very narrow DOF, with one shot focusing on the fence (with the mural more blurred) and another focused on the mural, portraying just the essence of the fence. Just some options to consider....

I applaud you for attempting to use a tripod for your first image. I personally fond doing so cumbersome and restrictive (actually I have never tried for these reasons).
I think in this case the subject is not clearly defined or gets lost resulting in confusion.
Your technique is likely solid, but choice of subject is so important in these cases.

I agree with your comments...

I think I might have an easier time lining up the exposures hand held. I walked around and everything I viewed was static in both color and depth. Fall colors or isolation of an interest subject would have been more interesting. I am thinking about trying to find isolated architecture...a abandoned building in an open field.

A second try, as you suggested, is on the schedule.
