I agree that smoke can allow for epic colors at sunset/rise but lately in the PNW there has been too much of a good thing.
A couple years ago I was photographing The Pillars of Rome and waiting for the sunset to reduce the harsh midday lighting and throw a wonderful palette of color onto the landscape.
Alas, the smoke from the wildfires caused the sun to "set" three hours ahead of schedule.
Your right, the smoke, makes some pretty cool colors during sunrise / sunsets. These photos were taken at the end of last summer up in the Port Orchard WA area, which is across the Sound from Seattle.

Do these represent the colors of the moment or were the colors enhanced? So beautiful! The first is so calm I can almost feel it.
the 1st photo is the actual colors...the 2nd photo was slightly darkened but not much...
