Trying One of Those Fancy Fine Art Photos

I took this hand held while walking around my home city of Durham NC. This is the tallest building in the city. It was built a few years ago. I was going for one of those black and white images people do of tall buildings or just architecture in general. I'm sure you've all seen them. I could have gotten fancy and set up my tripod and done a long exposure. But honestly, I don't feel super safe doing that in downtown Durham even during the day. Which is a shame. I tried faking a long exposure but it was more work than I was willing to put into it. I also just kind of like the way it looks with normal clouds.

"... I don't feel super safe..."

Best reason by me. I really want to take a night shot of the nearby big city waterfront at night, but as you said.....

I was going to ask if it was a 15mm, but I see that would have been incorrect. Love the angles.

I really like the moody feel you captured. It would have been interesting to see the street lamp and festive lighting lit.

Thanks Dean,

This location has a ton of potential. There are several string lights that I cloned out as well that would look fantastic at night or blue hour. I have several locations mapped out around this building that I think would make fantastic photos at blue hour with the lights lit up. I just don't feel like dealing with the stress of being down there, especially when it's dark. I feel like I always have to be looking over my shoulder. The police station is right there too. You would think there would be more of a presence but they are no where to be seen downtown.

It's really sad. In the last calendar year I've been to Budapest, Vienna, and Singapore. I never once felt unsafe in any of those places with my equipment at night. Wish I could say the same for my own country and my own city at that.

I love the drama in this shot Kyle.
It would have been interesting to see what a LE would have produced in the clouds (I love to experiment...) but you are right in thinking that they are fine the way they are.

Thanks Alan, yeah, I think a long exposure here would've been really cool. O well.

This is a nice photo, Kyle. I love everything pointing ominously upwards to the drama brewing in the sky. Even the reflections in the building glass seem to be caught up in it all. I like the contrast of light and darkness. Good job!

Thanks Jennifer!

Dig the concept. For me, the crushed blacks render a lot of the top right disposable. I wouldn't get rid of it all per se' but enough that it really focuses on the light. Windows are super cool.
