Alan Brown's picture

Ice dip

As the group has been a bit quiet of late I thought I'd open some recent work up for discussion.

These are images taken during a snowstorm, in 19F weather. My intent was to capture trees set against the snowy lake backdrop.

I watched with interest as the lady featured left her car and ventured out onto the frozen lake, with basket and axe in hand. When questioned, she was there to submerge herself in the frigid water, which she did for a set 3 minutes.

More informational than anything else but I'd love to hear opinions from others (all of which are respected, whether good or bad).

As a follow up, I'd like feedback on the processing of the last image. As a standalone shot do people prefer the original, the high-key more minimalistic approach, or the vintage-looking attempt?

There are no right or wrong opinions, just preferences.

Looking through the images first I thought someone was either going to have a picnic or setting up a campsite. Even with your title the thought of mimicking a Polar Bear was the last thing on my mind. Because I am sensible like that. >snicker<

My very intimidating professional opinion regarding the vintage look is too much vignette. Of the Ancient photos in my collection the vignette more oft fades to light, not dark.

Thanks for your response Dean.

It's interesting that you felt these were of someone going for a picnic (wielding an axe in the midst of a snowstorm.....). Perhaps that's a thing in your neck of the woods? :-)

Good point on the 'vintage' shot, I'll have to try a negative vignette to compare (or perhaps not label it as vintage-looking?).

May I attempt an edit of your photograph?

Sure, I have no problem with anyone experimenting with these.

Love this set, Alan, with a preference toward the originals.

Oh my word! These make me freeze just looking at them! The subject is wonderful and so is the minimalism. Since the surroundings are fairly uniform in color, I think maybe boosting those slight colors on the subject and her accessories might be interesting. Of the last three, I like the b&w one the most because of how much the subject (with snowflakes falling in front of her) stands out from the rest. These are great photos, and I envy the opportunity you were given. Great job!
