I am looking into purchasing some L lenses. I am about to purchase a 17-40mm F/4L for $450, and the same person may also sell me their 24-105 F/4L for a similar price.
I am looking both for advice on what L lenses (or other very high quality lenses) would make a good lens for the beginning photographer for a low price, and offers on lenses being sold. I am probably looking for something in the range of 24-105, as that is a great focal length for me. I would like to spend no more than $450.

I own both lenses and they are great. For anything longer, I have abandoned Canon in favor of Tamron. I feel Tamron optical quality is on par with Canon. Their lenses are not "L" grade but they are quite decent and WAY cheaper than similar Canon offerings.
You may want to check craigslist to see or even ebay. $450 is a good price IMO.
