Scott Flaherty's picture

McKenna

This is from my first senior portrait session ever, this past Fall. I usually shoot wildlife and landscapes, but my niece asked if I would do her senior portraits.

I think this is a very nicely lit photo. I would guess open shade or overcast sky. Even so, overcast skies don't necessarily equal good lighting. So good job with directing the light. She has beautiful eyes and you allowed them to be well defined.

The 2 critiques I would offer would be...
(1) Be aware of the hair. It's good if the hair shows motion, whether blowing in the wind or caused by the model's movement. I feel like her hair is just a little too wispy, which may appear as unkempt. I would have had her brush it down.
(2) Posing. Good job angling her torso and keeping the photo from becoming flat. However, her pose is a bit uninspiring. Her arms are straight down and the tilt of her head is awkward. A simple hand on the hip, or having her play with her scarf or hair would go a long way in improving her pose.

All in all, good job. I am sure she loved it.
