Want a Job Photographing a Family and Doing Their Household Chores? This Could Be for You

If you’re a budding family photographer living in New York, you might be interested in this job working with kids where not only will you be shooting images ready for Instagram, you’ll also be doubling up as “Mother’s Helper.” Sound good?

The advert posted on Craigslist is searching for someone who has “advanced knowledge of Photoshop and Lightroom,” experience of working with families and young children, and be “comfortable acting as Mother’s Helper on days when not shooting/editing.”

As writer Dorsey Shaw commented on Twitter, soon “NYC creatives will only exist to work on personal media projects for bored wealthy people.”

The term “Mother’s Helper” (notably with capitalization) is an interesting choice given that “mother’s little helper” is a euphemism for valium, as explained by the Rolling Stones in 1966. “And it helps her on her way,” sang Mick Jagger, “gets her through her busy day.” Hopefully, those applying will not also be expected to have experience in supplying.

While some well-off families might take on an au pair or a nanny who could be asked to shoot a few photographs, it probably takes a different level of wealth to hire a dedicated photographer who is also expected to help out with the school run and getting the kids to bed. Craigslist seems like an odd means of recruiting, so there might be more this than meets the eye (hopefully not providing Diazepam). If you submit an application, be sure to let us know how you get on.

Yeah, no.

Is this some kind of joke?

At a minimum of $80 an hour, I'd probably do it.

As Bullet-Tooth Tony once said, "It depends on all the elements of the equation. How many are there?" If the pay is right, it could be a good opportunity. Having said that, I doubt the pay is going to be right.
