Burial at Sea

The bronze catafalque is dedicated to the ‘Unknown Soldier’, symbolising all the people who died during the Siege of Malta during WWII. A Latin phrase referencing Psalm 140 is inscribed on the memorial tablet, which reads: “You cast thy shadow upon my head during the time of war 1940-1943”.
The bronze catafalque, by Michael Sandle was created between 1988 and 1992. It was unveiled, along with the bell tower, in 1992 by Queen Elizabeth II on the 50th anniversary of Malta being awarded the George Cross.
The monument is located in Valletta beside the Lower Barakka Gardens, at the base of the Siege Bell Memorial.
