Pete Coco's picture

Maestro Ron Carter

I captured this portrait of jazz bassist Ron Carter in his dressing room after a performance at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Originally, I thought I was there just to photograph the concert, so I did not bring any lights or even a hot shoe flash. However, Mr. Carter's publicist asked me to capture some portraits after his performance since he was wearing an especially cool suit (he always dresses impeccably). We took some photos in the lobby, but the overhead lighting was not great, so we decided to try a few in his dressing room.

I moved the chairs and items from the counter and asked Mr. Carter to sit in the center as I captured some images. This was my favorite from the series of impromptu natural light portraits.
