This is a composite image created from my contemporary photo of the church building, combined with Victorian/Edwardian era photographs of the people sourced from the US Library of Congress. I love historical portraits. Maybe it's because my grandfather immigrated to the United States from Eastern Europe in 1910 that stirs my imagination. All I know about him are the facts, otherwise I have no idea why he left home and came to this country. I wish so much that I knew more. At least I have pictures of him, and books which describe the place and current events from which he came, as well as the city of New York where he arrived. All of the people in this picture have a story too, left for us all to write.

The pictures of the people here are from approximately 1905 and identified in their description as public domain with no known restrictions of use. I certainly thought twice about using another photographer's images, but I feel good about giving these people another life after a hundred years or so from the time they last walked the streets of this earth. I would be flattered to know someone that far in the future might benefit in some way from the images I make today.
