Portrait photography is a popular but challenging genre, as it requires good technical skills with your camera and lighting, the ability to pose people and make them feel comfortable, and solid capabilities when it comes time to edit the image. If I could give one piece of advice to new portrait photographers, it would be to err on the side of doing less when it comes time to edit. It is extremely common for new photographers to have too heavy a hand when editing their images, and when it comes to portraits, this can result in your subjects looking unnatural or even plastic.
