Intel AI Tool Makes GTA V Look Incredibly Photorealistic

Just when you thought your brand new super-spec gaming machine was powerful enough to handle anything, something new comes along to dash your hopes and monster rig dreams. A recent video from Intel demonstrates an AI tool that "enhances" graphics to look photorealistic. The implications of this could be incredible for gaming and photography industries.

On the YouTube channel Intel ISL a recent video demonstrates some remarkable results from an AI tool. This tool uses data from cityscapes to upscale the graphics on games such as Grand Theft Auto 5 to look photorealistic. Each computer-generated image is analyzed through machine learning technologies and compared to real-life images before they're enhanced. The results are described as being temporally stable and are without any visible artefacts or false information.

The video begins by showing the game in its natural state and then switches over to what it looks like with the AI tool in effect.

In the screenshot above, for example, cars appear with more realistic reflections. Distant objects such as mountains and greenery appear less like gaming animations and have a more realistic look to them too.

Of course, a great deal more work needs to be done in order for it to look indistinguishable from real-life images and scenes, however, this latest demonstration is quite impressive.

Check out the full video linked above to see the explanation of how Intel has managed this.
