A Review of the Sony FE 28-60mm f/4-5.6 Lens

At just 5.9 oz (167 g), the Sony FE 28-60mm f/4-5.6 is an extremely portable lens, making it an intriguing choice for people like landscape and travel photographers who want a versatile set of focal lengths without a lot of bulk. This excellent video review takes a look at the lens and the sort of performance and image quality you can expect from it in practice.

Coming to you from Christopher Frost, this great video review takes a look at the Sony FE 28-60mm f/4-5.6 lens. Despite its extremely compact size, the 28-60mm still comes with a nice range of features, including:

  • Retractable Design: Measures just 1.8" long when not in use.
  • Lightweight: Weighs only 5.9 oz, pairing well with compact camera bodies.
  • Dust- and Moisture-Resistant: Suitable for inclement weather conditions.
  • Aspherical Elements: Three aspherical elements reduce spherical aberrations and distortion.:
  • Linear Autofocus Motor: Ensures fast, precise, and quiet focusing.
  • Internal Focusing Mechanism: Ideal for both stills and video applications.
  • Minimum Focusing Distance: 11.8" allows for close-up subject work.
  • Rounded Seven-Blade Diaphragm: Delivers pleasing bokeh quality.

Optically, the lens impresses with outstanding center sharpness across its zoom range, though corner sharpness only peaks at narrower apertures like f/11. The lens exhibits some barrel distortion at wider angles, and vignetting is noticeable without in-camera corrections. However, these issues are not uncommon in lenses of this category and can be managed effectively. The lens's close focusing ability and pleasing bokeh are additional advantages, adding to its versatility despite its limitations. Altogether, for anyone who wants an especially portable lens, it looks like it's worth a look. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Frost.
