The Red Epic: The Next Generation of HD Video/Photo

While many Canon and Nikon users are bickering about whether DSLR cameras should even have HD video capabilities, the company RED is completely changing the game between both photography and motion video. If you have even been slightly interested in video then you have probably heard about their famous RED One camera (District 9, The Social Network) that shot in 4k resolution. Well very soon they are releasing a new camera called the RED Epic which will shoot 60% more resolution at 5K (up to 28K!) as well as being able to pull large 12 megapixel images directly out of video. There is no doubt the bridge between still cameras and video cameras is quickly narrowing, and innovators like RED are definitely at the forefront. Check out this video where Ted Schilowitz takes questions from fans in Vietnam where the RED One is already the primary video camera of choice.

I been waiting on this for a while now. I cant wait to get it. This and the scarlet.

I'm excited to see this camera come out but I don't see how any sports shooter is going to use this thing without a viewfinder.

It's a "legos" camera. The unit they are showing will not produce 28k video, it's simply too small to do that. Their sensor that produces 28k is the Red Epic 617 which is about $55,000(2008) and is 186x56mm.

Interesting... Not sure where any noteworthy Nikon or Canon shooters have dissed dslr video. If anything theyve embraced it. Both companies, especially Canon will keep improving their products that appeal to a variety of customers. RED will always be a niche product Leica. Im not bashing RED they make incredible products, but they arent going to survive trying to compete with Canon and Nikon. Nikon is huge and Canon is at least four times bigger. If RED tries to compete with them on a more prosumer level they will get their clocks cleaned. RED be smart and follow the Leica model.

It's a game changer. The only problem I can see is the price, but it's so worth it. High quality still frames, clean slow mo, fits Canon and Nikon lenses...I'm in.

Right but with the S35 "brain" still clocking in at 17x the amount of a 5D2 body (comparable sensor size), this is still very much a high level prosumer product.

Kevin, I think this thing will take still shots anywhere from 12-200+ megapixels depending on which digital back you have installed. Check out their resolution chart on their site to see all the configurations that will be available for this body.

@ Uhhh - Interesting… RED make digital motion cameras whose competition is the Arri Alexa and the Sony F35 (which cost more), not the 5DII. There are several Motion Picture Camera Rental Houses that rent RED cameras here in SoCal.
Some Big Budget feature films have been shot with RED. "Social Network" fore-instance.
Even though still photographers did covers for Time, Esquire, Vogue etc using RED, I don't think there's a REDRebel in the future 8-D

Red has been announcing high resolution cameras for many years and never delivering. In 2007 they said that the Red 617 would be available in mid-2008 and it never happened. I would be very skeptical to prepay for a camera from these guys. Go with Canon...it's way less cost and less hype.

Steven Soderbergh has shoot all of his films from 2008 to the present with RED cameras. "Contagion" is being shot right now with a 5K Epic (starring Marion Cotillard, Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Laurence Fishburne and Gwyneth Paltrow).

Peter Jackson's two film adaptation of The Hobbit will be shot in 3D using RED DIGITAL CINEMA'S soon to be released EPIC Digital Cameras ... The Hobbit will be amongst the first productions in the world to use the EPIC and at least thirty cameras will be required by the 3-D production.
