I was doing an architectural shoot for a client of mine. The dog laid patiently by the window for much of the shoot. He was sleeping when the homeowner thought it would be good to take him for a walk. I asked him to hold off waking him, until I put my nifty-fifty on the camera. Taken at f/4.5 @ 1/30th.

I guess I just don't understand what a well done dog portrait looks like. "Needs Work"? Really? Beautiful pup, great pose, well lit with nice rim lighting and a soft background. What else do you need? Excellent!
