Poisonous Plants: Hippobroma longiflora (Star of Bethlehem, not to be confused with other species by that name) is a flowering plant in the Campanulaceae family. It's notable for the toxic pyridine alkaloids lobeline and nicotine, which produce psychoactive effects at small doses and unpleasant effects, including vomiting, muscle paralysis, and trembling, at higher doses. When handling this plant, wear gloves, and avoid eye contact; its sap is a skin irritant and can also cause blindness.
