I'd been hiking around a dune field in Death Valley when a sand storm blew up quick. At first, it was beautiful, then it was unpleasant and threatening to trash my gear so I packed up and stumbled toward the road. I noticed this guy walking along a dune crest stop and look. By happenstance, he was silhouetted against what passed for the sun through all the sand in the atmosphere. I had just enough time to snap a few images before he moved on. My Nikon was packed away to keep the sand out (I still had to have it professionally cleaned) so the phone was what I had at hand. Everything I hate about phone shots is still there (lack of dynamic range, muddiness in the colors, noise) but I like the scene better than any planned shot from the day.
