I agree with George. I prefer the composition of the first, though I think I might like it better rotated 90 degrees to the left, placing the subject at the bottom right corner. I think the extra width would make it appear even more desolate and empty.
I set up my tripod to the longest length possible and laid underneath it. I usually use a remote but I couldn't find mine that day so I just sent it to a 10 second delay. I had an ultrawide lens (17mm). I took photos of snow around me as well and in post stitched a few together and edited out the legs of the tripod.
