Welcome

Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm a photographer in LA. I have a studio under my digital marketing agency and love to mess around at least once a month with creative projects! Next on my list to try is I would like to start shooting with florescent light tubes. I was thinking I could just make a simple set up to learn with by using Home Depot tubes. Anyone here ever make their own set up? Tips/advice welcomed! Thank you!

Hi,

I actually have 3 fluro banks in my studio and they are mainly used for videography. I personally tend to stay away from them for shooting. The fluros tend to just shoot out too much spread of light for my liking.

I have only ever used the fluro banks during lighting workshops right at the end of the session just to give the togs the ability to do a group shoot with models.

Years ago when I started out and knew very little about lighting. I built a wooden stand and attached a 600mm fluro on each side. I then shot through the middle which created an even light and an amazing highlight in my subjects eyes. For some reason I scrapped that idea after I discovered studio strobes and never tried it again.

I've always like these shots of Teagan but I never thought to look at the highlights in the eyes to see how you lit them. Interesting.

Nice ok. Right now I am using strobes, I was just curious on the effect...LED would probably be a much better way to go. Thanks guys! If I end up giving it a try I will post my results.

I've never really thought about shooting with floruos myself, what an interesting concept. As Greg mentioned though, controlling the spill would be the hardest part of the whole thing so I'd be interested in hearing what you come up with.

The thought of shooting using LED light strips has been something I've wanted to explore though but I imagine the lighting with these wouldn't be as difficult to manage.
