Father In-Law portrait

A portrait of my father in-law Doug Bayer. I already feel that the I would have liked the highlights a little more thin. They're spilling on to his face a little much. I'm not the best portrait photographer but I'm working on it, so what do ya got for me.

Nice shot. The first thing I noticed was the hand position. The right arm could be better posed. A safe pose would be crossing the arms and having the fingers visible.

Keep up the good work and keep shooting. (◕ᴗ◕✿)

Yes I can see see that. Posing is definitely something that I'm not great at. I shoot bmx and have never really needed to think about it. There's no posing going on with that type of shooting. They're going to be in the position that they're in.
Been working on it though. Thanks for the feedback!

Hey, Tom

You don't always have to follow "the rule of 3rds". In this case, it looks way off balanced. I noticed that with another one of your photos as well. I'd frame him center or close to center.

I'd do a 3/4 crop so his legs aren't partially showing.

Not sure how you set up your lights as to why there's rim lights on both sides of his face. I'd start off with the basics with the typical 45 degree angles. Then, try different things from there. Also, you don't always have to have light directly straight at him. Try feathering the light so it's just skimming him.

As far as framing I wanted him framed in with the tree and edge of frame. Main light was very feathered with a large octa. Personally I really like the rim lights on both sides. I think if the were a little less intense.
I really don't like when things are centered unless there's a lot of symmetry going on.
I like your crop suggestion. I couldn't decide weather to crop the legs out or not.
I've done a good amount of basic lighting. Really not that interesting to me.
This lighting set up to me is awesome. I need to dial it in obviously.
