Ellis Wood's picture

Branching out for the stars

Took this image in August during the peak Milky Way season. I shot it for 30 seconds at 3200 Iso. I wanted to align the tree with the Milky Way and the Branch with Mars.

Having just started, I haven't really done much stacking, tracking or blending but hope to do some next year.

Feel free to critique. Thank you.

way better than my first attempt

That was my very first attempt. So you can be the judge of that haha. It takes time though to be fair.

mine lmao

hey! at least your stars are sharper haha!

looks like somebody shot bleach into the milky way haha

interesting description hahhaa!

Hi Ellis. If you have photoshop, lightroom I would color balance (although this is subjective). I tend to like my skies blue. Remember the 500 rule in order to get pin point stars ie 500 divided by focal length of your lens for get the correct shutter speed. If you are as wide as possible then unfortunately you would then have to have a higher iso. If you have lightroom you can do a lot with noise. As to the composition you are right to get some interesting foreground but if possible next time go somewhere without the two branches sticking out, they seem distracting. Is there a reason you cropped it, (was it cropped at the top on the bottom on your frame). Did you take it in wales?

I wanted to get the tree and stars in, nothing else. I appreciated the advice! Yeah fortunately where i live it is pitch black. Thank you

Wonderful picture. Using that tree made you photo so much better.

I think you've laid a great foundation to a good start. Actually taking the time to visualize the branch lining up with Mars is great! From my monitor, it looks as though your focus point was on the tree; hence, the reason your stars are a little soft more so than the 30 sec shutter speed.

yeah your point is valid. That is why I am trying to do composites now and do more blend/stacking. Then everything is pin sharp and clean

Very nice.
