I held a lighting workshop recently. Sterling was the model. I rarely shoot silhouettes but I wanted to incorporate that arch into a shot. Backlighting became an obvious choice.

i was having the same troubles shooting night shots as i have a D3300 and they just weren't built for this but they are good attempts if you figure out a way to shoot at night with our base model cameras let me know. its unfortunate that we get so much noise in our shots at that iso did you happen to try at a lower iso? also for not a great expense getting the nikon 50mm 1.8 lens could probably do some good
