this is my first attempt at some night / astro type photographs, was shot on a Nikon d600, 24mm, f 2.8, 30 sec. It took me a couple of attempts running down to the tent in the dark and turning on the light for different amounts of time so it wasn't over exposed.
All advice and feedback appreciated
looks good
This is a great first attempt! I would make two major observations that made mine go way up in quality. You composition is straight fire so no complaints there. The first is the Rule of 500. You take your focal length and divide it into 500. So 500/24 = 20 seconds. However with a crop factor on a D600 you need to divide again by the crop factor 1.5. So it's (500/24)/1.5 = ~13 Seconds. This will cut down the blur in the star trails as well.
The second point is focus, setting to manual and focusing on a specific bright star and adjusting till it's tack sharp will keep the rest of the sky in near perfect focus.
There is a great online tutorial that can assist with post processing to make the sky pop and the tent be a great focus point. https://www.lonelyspeck.com/how-to-process-milky-way-astrophotography-in...
Thanks for the feedback Cordell. The D600 is actually a full frame body but i wasn't aware of that rule, so next time out ill try with 20 seconds.. will definitely check out that tutorial too! Once again thanks for the feedback, much appreciated
My bad. I always get the Nikon numbers mixed up.
