Edwin Galea's picture

Gibbous Moon

Here is my shot of the waxing gibbous (97%) moon from 19 July 2024 taken in the New Forest, England. As my photographs were taken on 19 July 2024, almost 55 years to the day after the first humans, Neil Armstrong and Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin of the Apollo 11 crew, walked on the Moon on 20 July 1969, I thought I would annotate the photograph showing the landing site of the Eagle, the lunar lander from Apollo 11.

The first (and second) image was taken with the Sony A7iv + Sony GM 70-200mm f2.8 II + 2.0xTC and is a stack of 8 images, all taken handheld.

The EXIF is, ISO 1000, F5.6, 1/1600 s, @400mm, stacked in photoshop.

When taking the image, the moon was low on the horizon and had just cleared the tree line. I should also say that the image was taken handheld and after a bottle of wine with dinner and two negroni's, that could explain why the image is not as sharp as it could be!

This is also why I used such a fast shatter speed, high ISO and wide open aperture.

The second image is just a screen grab of the stacked image with the Apollo 11 lunar lander landing site highlighted, hence the slightly lower quality.
