first one I'm not really a fan of. the background is a bit boring ,the angle of the shot should have been to the left and upward a bit and the mid tones are a bit flat.
second pic is much better more interesting background leading lines better contrast, nice off set, skin tones are good nice job.

Agree with Joseph C. First shot has good human element, but the overall effect is relatively flat.
Love the use of light in the second photo. You did a good job of balancing good skin tones with contrast.
