As it was just Mother's Day here in the US I managed to snag the floral bouquet sent to my wife and have a bit of fun.
This is a pink carnation, focus stacked to provide DOF and converted to highlight the form.
Feedback from all (whether new to photography or an expert) encouraged.
Looks great Alan, looks like you nailed the focus for the most part, a little bit of blur in a couple of spots, I had the same issue. With this many layers of petals it is a challenge to get every level shot tack sharp unless you greatly increase the amount of shots. You can certainly see the cells of the petals with their subtle specular highlights.
Nicely done ~
Thanks Joe. This was 6 shots, the major difficulty I found was identifying points to focus on - the nearest and farthest are easy to see, but trying to capture the range in-between proved a challenge.
With adjustments so minor this is definitely something I am going to have to experiment with more.
Fine image! You capture the delicacy of the bloom. And I like your frame-filling composition, with its edges just visible. Do you use AF when "stacking", Alan?
Thanks Chris. All stacking has to be done using manual focus to control the focal point.
I don't know of any other way of doing it but would be interested if others have any creative ideas.
Nice.
I like it. I'm curious why Ruth hasn't chimed in here with a crop suggestion for a more abstract view. In her stead, I'll mention it:
Thanks Phillip. I considered cropping but held off as I wanted to include the texture of the outer leaves and provide a little contrast.
I like both, and actually have a 10x8 print that closely matches your crop.
You know me so well my friend. I've been working a lot lately. Spring has sprung and it is 'botany' time! You are correct and I would have suggested this. I would also suggest a tiny increase in the shadows to get depth between the petals while being careful not to lose the light, white delicateness of the image.
Lovely work Alan!
