Surfing can be black and white

The waves at the Jersey Shore can be tinted greenish brown. The water is shallow for a long distance out from the beach so the waves pick up a lot of sand. I find that surf shots here often do well in black and white as a way to get around this muddy look. This is a shot that i think works well but i am open to feedback. I mostly do these to try and learn about motion and panning.

Thanks!

PS - I dropped in a couple more just for fun. I don't post stuff like this often so this is one of those "check this out" for fun sharing things! (sand spots are unfortunate!)

PSS - Don't know why some uploads come out looking so soft focus. These look good on my screen but the uploaded ones look like they lost some in the process. Oh well!

I totally agree. I used to shoot a group of skimboarders on Miami Beach. It's basically surfing, but they run along the shoreline and throw their skeg-less boards onto the water in front of them, then jump onto it and skim across the shallow water, occasionally hitting a small wave like this one. It's not as big as surfing, but you can shoot this from a few dozen feet away with an inexpensive lens.

I'd love to be able to get this close! Because it is so shallow here the waves break really far out. It is fun to shoot though and I give the guys their photos. They get so excited because it is something they would never have the opportunity to get. It makes me happy.

This is inspiring. Maybe I'll go out and try to get some shots under the Golden Gate Bridge... There is a break very near to the shore where surfers congregate. They sort of slide past you as they ride. It might make for some interesting photography.

Thanks for posting these. They really are a lot of fun, and you have caught the action very nicely.
