Up Close with a Wide Angle Lens

I love these types of shots. This is also my favorite way to use a wide angle lens. I forget where I first saw a shot like this. It was a local shot with the cleat for the boat sharp with the boat blurry in the back ground. It has inspired me to take several of these types of shots (I have several in my portfolio and will probably add this one as well). This past weekend I was at a fancy marina and harbor club with a bunch of multi million dollar yachts docked at the marina. I always feel a little weird getting this close to these boats with my camera but lucky for me it's winter time and most of the boat owners are not there. I really don't think it would be a big deal but you never know with these rich people sometimes! Anyway, would love to know what you think?

I too like those type of picture...mooring lines, anchor chains...anchors, you name it maritime anytime. I like tall ships, they are old, they show history, they have class...Navy ships, they too are bad ass...small boats, like the one in the back ground, are bad ass...NICE SHOT!

Thank you!

I thought this was from your earlier series with the cleat, Kyle, featuring a similar viewing angle on the yacht.

I think I'd prefer either more or less rope - either show the whole coil, or have three edges cut more strongly (by moving closer for the capture) so that the coil's form is clear, but implied. This one looks as if it's a slightly awkward in-between, as if you've accidentally clippped its edges. What do you think? All subjective, no right/wrong here.

As with the cleat, the processing is well done for my tastes.

Thanks for the comments as always! I wanted the whole coil in the shot as well but I didn’t want any of the dock in the foreground. I could’ve probably cropped it in post though. The problem that comes up with these shots is they aren’t the easiest to do. I’m laying on my stomach on a dock that’s maybe 8ft wide and my feet were already hanging off. The only way to get the entire coil is to back up so you can see my dilemma. I could also do a higher angle I suppose but I liked the angle how it is. I took a ton of these types of shots this past weekend and probably have one where the entire coil is in the shot but for whatever reason this one caught my eye when I was going through them this morning and choosing one to edit.

it's a good shot!

And yes, should've said - it's a good shot!

Hi Kyle. Amazing image and the story. complemented by your choice of depth of field. The vision is held back at the star performer by means of focus and tonality.

Just a thought. Felt the crop a little tight for the star of this story. Tried seeing it differently.

How did you add to it like that? I'm assuming something in photoshop I don't know about.

the work is not accurate. just wanted to share my view point.
Conceptually, taken the parts from the rope pasted. created shadow as per light direction, cloned the ships. blurred matching to the DoF.
