Initial impressions of Sony A7R4 and 100-400GM lens.

Here are some recent photos I took with the new Sony A7R4 and the Sony 100-400 4.5-5.6 G Master lens. When Shooting wildlife and small birds, being able to crop is key, and the R4 is amazing. The 100-400 is amazing for a zoom. No CA and it is sharp to the edges. The cost of all those extra megapixels, however, is noise. Uncropped images look fine at up to about ISO1200. If you crop more than 50%, the images start turning to noisy crap above ISO400. Topaz Denois has been a lifesaver, but I suggest getting fast lenses to keep your ISO down. Thinking of getting an A9 for lower light shots. Has anyone else experienced this ISO issue with the R4?

Hi Robert,

Lovely pictures that you took. Topaze really did a great work, there is no noise on these pictures, maybe a bit on the first one, but nothing bad.

Nice to read that there is not CA. I can indeed notice how sharp the edges are.

Great pictures !

Thank you. I use topaz denoise AI much more than topaz sharpen AI. Unless there is motion blur, Denois does a great job sharpening things up. Gigapixel also does a great job with noise, sharpness, and upscaling. I don't think I could find any instances where this 100-400 lens has produced ANY CA. Even against hard contrast shots at 5.6. I also have the Zeiss 55mm 1.8. It is insanely sharp but if you shoot wide open in a high contrast situation, there is so much purple CA that the shots are unusable, I guess all lenses have their pros and cons. I have to say though, I am struggling to find a con with this 100-400GM

Nice to read this. I don't know if it's sometimes a matter of camera body and how it processes. I use a Tamron 70-300Di LD, and the Canon version produces a lot of CA, while I almost never had some with the Sony A58 a couple of years ago.
Anyway, these snaps are awesome !
