Floating images

I'd love to know more about how other photographers approach "floating" type of portraits or images. Here is my first attempt, which I considered a marginal success, but it was just trial and error at the end of a regular photo session with a willing client/subject. This was an impromptu attempt with one speedlight. I'd love to plan something out and get better results.
