How do you attract interns (in the middle of nowhere)?

I've been having a hard time attracting interest to interns. The only option is paying people I entrusted (such as models) to travel to me and help for paid shoots. I finally got the chance to have my "ad" for interns at my former college, but zero interests. Not sure if its cause the college is cause of the 30min commute is appealing (for studio shoots). I may try the 2 other colleges in the similar area but chances are I may get interests but they'd lose interests when they see the commute. Of course the alternative would be saying I can call them when I got on-location shoots around their area but looking to get interns to get my studio portfolio beefed up during the upcoming winter. Ideas, advice?

Commute and no-pay doesn't bode well to most people nowadays ( and it's reasonable to be absolutely honest ).
Chip in some cash and you'll surely get some calls.

I have this funny notion people should be paid for work. Depending on non-paid personnel in a pinch is pretty iffy, too, it seems to me. But that's just me.

Yes, some people pay in knowledge. I know vast majority of working photographers pay this way as knowledge/education can be priceless. I know I would if I had a local photographer I wanted to learn from and didn't require a non-compete contract. But sadly local colleges around here lack photography students, and students who actually love photography and not just taking it as an elective.
