My first shoot after Scott Hargis Video Tutorial (open for comments)

I recently had a photoshoot for my parents new holiday home.

During the summer I bought the online tutorial from Scott Hargis. And I tried to put everything into practice.

Since I'm keen to improve myself I'm open for comments and tips.
Perhaps helping me explaining why my image om the left gets blurry. I focused manually.

Camera used: Canon 70d
Lens: Sigma 10-20 4-5.6
12mm Angle
ISO 320, F8,0, 1/160 Shutterspeed

Good composition. 12mm was a good choice as you needed the width and converging horizontals still look ok at 18mm (35 equiv). Barrel distortion and verticals are sorted.

Judging by the shadows of the lights you either bounced of the back wall/corner or just blended a bracketed exposure. Either way, it turned out good other than the eye being drawn to the blown out patio roof.

Blurriness could be a lens characteristic, result of f8 depending on your focus point, minor ghosting from HDR blend/luminosity mask blend.

Thank you for your comment.

I placed a speed light on the arm rest just behind the fireplace (bottom left corner). Bounced of the wall. Second light was a shoot thru from camera right (stairs).

I will look up some more reviews about the lens. It's more then annoying.

Really good application of what you learned. The only thing I'd add to this is compositing = blend this flash layer with an ambient layer to make certain areas look more natural than flashy, for example, the ceiling could have more ambient light. Mike Kelly does this in his tutorial.

Blurring might be because of your aperture if it was wide, and that's ok. Focal points, usually centered, should be sharp. The perimeters of the photo can be less sharp and have a slight vignette.

Nice job overall.

One question: if you I've used a tripod then why did you use ISO 320 ? It's better to use a small ISO meanwhile the wind is not blowing.

The blurriness in the left side is most likely due to the lens that was used. I don't think it is a DOF issue because things in the center of the lens, the patio chairs and the coffee table appear clear.

Looks pretty nice except the shadow on the left of the rug. Its too much and makes it look like its floating. The orange light in the window reflection could probably be removed as well, not sure where its coming from but its very distracting. Really nice otherwise though. Can't really tell what was edited and what wasn't so that's good!

Had my lens checked by Sigma Netherlands. They told me the lens was in such a bad shape to begin with, it had not supposed to be sold in the first place. Great..... Got rid of the lens and bought a new one from canon.
