Natural Light + Athletics

Hello all. Eric here, I just want to introduce myself to this group. I've been a strobist for a while, but recently I have begun to create nice clean natural light images.

Gear = Nikon D800, 85mm @ f/1.4

Hey Eric,

Love the shot. Beautiful eyes, strong pose, nice lighting.

Not much to criticize, but we have to give something, right? Haha. I think the crop should either include her navel or take it out. Right now it's just sitting right on it. Also, seems like her stomach tone is a lot darken than other parts of her skin. Great shot.

Thanks! I definitely love CC from others. Its how you get better. :)

Nice shot Eric. I would tighten the crop, or even consider cropping it as a portrait. Also, think about removing that building outcrop above her head as it's distracting. Should be easy to do with PS or similar editor.

One thing to consider: On shots where the model is looking out toward something as in this one, using the rule of thirds to open up the side the model is looking toward instead of centering is often very effective.

Also, it looks like there's a slight issue with chromatic/monochromatic aberration, most noticeably on the top left building, and on the edge of the right building; most likely due to the lens being at 1.4. Try stepping down a bit next time to see the difference. You could also use Lightroom or another editor to take it out as much as possible, or even use an editor to clean up the edges with a brush or other tool.

If you don't mind me asking - did you soften the skin on her face?

Cheers,
Mike

Thanks Mike, Great comment! I noticed the aberration when I shot this a while back and since them I have felt no need to shoot at f1.4 anymore because of it. Yes there is some skin retouch done.

Nice photo Eric! I would work on the crop as Mike said. Lighting does look good though! Also, any tips for starting out as a strobist?
