Victorian House Project

Hi everyone,

I recently photographed an old Victorian house that a friend of mine restored. My goal for this, was to get some photos I can use to build up my interior design/architectural portfolio.

It was a really overcast day but I actually didn't mind it, it allowed me to capture some more moody shots. The house was kind of dark overall but there were pockets of really nice soft light pouring into the house.

All of these shots are a blend of the natural light and artificial light from my godox ad300 pro with a soft box. In all of the places I could I took my flash outside and flashed it through the windows to mimic the natural light. I had never tried doing this before but I really like the results I got from it. It's something I will definitely be adding to my bag of tricks for the future.

These are a few of my favorites from the shoot. Thanks for looking!

Wonderful shots Kyle.
In my ignorance I would have assumed that and overcast day would help balance the indoor/outdoor lighting levels.

It's really good to hear how you achieve such stunning results, learning about your experiments just adds to that.

You have really captured the inherent character of the home, which I think is critical in these kind of shots, and likely important to potential clients.

Great work all round, I especially like the bedroom shot with that framed view of the outside.

Thanks Alan! The bedroom shot is one of my favorites as well. It's funny how sometimes the simplest shots/easiest shots turn out the best. I could tell on the back of the camera that that one was going to be good. It's like, it's just a simple bedroom shot, but something about draws me in. Like I can almost feel my self laying in the bed.

Great work Kyle. I would think that cloudy day would scatter interior light a bit to help fill the dark pockets, more than a clear day? But again, I don't think any amount on daylight can will satisfy most houses, especially Victorian.

As my wife was a real estate agent, I appreciate what goes into staging, and as a 'photographer', I appreciate the composition.

The only thing that really stands out for me is in your fourth photograph... the halve of a television.

I had the opportunity to visit the Flavel House in Astoria, OR...an 1884-85 Queen Anne. I had a entry level DSLR with kit lens and the photographs left a lot to be desired. I really need to visit the Museum again and see if my photography has improved any over the years. Of course, being a museum, tripods and flashes are not allowed.

Here is an exterior shot from years ago.

Thanks Dean! Although it would be tough to get some good interiors of that museum/house it looks like you could get some nice exteriors.

Dude, I love these interiors. Way to experiment and grats on some really cool moodiness.

Thank you!

These are really beautiful, Kyle. The natural light is lovely! Good work. Are you doing more of these sorts of photos these days? I remember you were trying your hand at different things for income.

Thank you. Yes, I’m doing more of this type of work but still not enough yet for it to be sustainable.
