Alan Brown's picture

In the midst of the storm

So winter finally hit Vermont with a bang yesterday - persistent snow yesterday dumped 18" on us.
Of course I had to get out and take advantage of conditions - although falling snow can be difficult to shoot in it does provide unique opportunities.

I like to allow images to sit for a while after the first round of editing but thought I'd present a few to get some fresh eyes and invite feedback.

As always I appreciate each and every comment (positive or negative), valuing the perspective of novice and veteran alike.

Hi Alan. Good frames...
In image 2, the dry leave brown colour is adding interest to almost BW composition. it can be even more in concept. I usually like compositions like in image 3. for its story through context, negative space and/or other complementing elements.

Thanks Vijay. The story is different for each, but I can certainly see how folks feel #3 has more to offer in that respect.

Hi Allan, Paul again. Netherlands here, so we have a time zone issue. For your pictures, I like 3 the most. Same reasons as Vijay mentioned. I think it would make the picture stronger if there was a little more contrast and some more blacks. Just a little bit. For the rest enjoy that beautiful view.

Thanks for your comments Paul. All are constructed with balance in mind, but I agree that #3 offers a greater story.

It's interesting you mentioned contrast as that was my initial thought. However I found that increasing the blacks destroyed the mood of the scene (falling snow) somewhat.

I may revisit somewhere down the line.......

I understand Alan. But if I did, then only the big tree a tiny bit.But I can understand your POV.

All fine images as I expect from you, Alan. The third is the favourite for Mr Asymmetry here.

I would never have guessed..... thanks for the confirmation :-)

I love the asymmetry as well and it, combined with the lower perspective. is really nice.

Thanks Ruth.

I wrote a comment here earlier that isn't showing up so maybe I didn't save it. I just wanted to say that opening these so you get the pop up with the black background shows a really delicate and lovely soft blue in these that I find really pleasing. It's kind of lost in the stark whiteness of this page but when you open them you see this delicateness that is really attractive. I like it a lot Alan!

Yes, and the subtle colour of the leaves takes a moment to "open up", for me anyway. Alan has a subtle touch, one of his strengths.

His fatal flaw is that he didn't like my cloud, though.

Just when i cleaned up from the first coffee laugh....

Thanks Chris (and apologies for the cloud....)

't's OK. I'll live.

You'll keep.

Thanks Ruth - that's a great point. I hadn't realized that the background turns to black when opening/enlarging - so much for my eye for detail.....
